Great South Bay

Fire Island

Picture
Have you ever thought about exploring Fire Island by boat? There are no cars on this 32-mile-long island that runs parallel to Long Island’s south shore. You can only get there by boat, so that's the perfect way to spend a day.

The island has all sorts of scenery, including beaches, dunes, maritime forests, and salt marshes. There are a ton of fun activities you can do, like swimming, kayaking, fishing, and bird watching. You can also stop and relax for a while.  There are also several villages on the island, so you can make a day out of it and find a restaurant or shop for souvenirs.

Sailors Haven offers a variety of activities, primarily centered around its unique natural features and seasonal facilities.
Explore the Sunken Forest:
This globally rare maritime holly forest is the main attraction. You can walk through it on a one-and-a-half-mile boardwalk trail. In season, you can also join a ranger-guided tour.
Beach & Water Activities:
Swimming: There is a lifeguarded beach available during the summer
Beachcombing: The ocean beach is popular for finding sea shells.
Visit the Visitor Center: Located near the ferry dock, it features a touch table, fish tanks, and a gift shop where you can get a passport stamp.

Fire Island Pines

Upscale & Modern: Unlike the more casual "shack" vibe of some other Fire Island towns, The Pines is known for its glamorous, multi-million dollar homes. It is an architectural destination.
Wooden Boardwalks: There are no paved roads or cars here. You walk everywhere on elevated wooden boardwalks that wind through the pine trees and dunes.  LGBTQ+ Haven: It is a globally renowned queer safe haven with a vibrant social scene, distinct from its slightly more bohemian neighbor, Cherry Grove.
Nightlife & Socializing The social scene is the heartbeat of The Pines.
Low Tea at The Blue Whale: This is the quintessential Pines ritual. "Low Tea" is a daily happy hour (usually starting around 5:00 PM or 6:00 PM) where the community gathers at the harbor to socialize, drink the famous "Pines  Daytime Activities
The Beach: The Pines has access to a pristine, wide stretch of white sand ocean beach. It is generally clothing-optional in many areas.
General Store: The Pines Pantry is the main market for groceries and essentials.
Walk to Cherry Grove: You can walk to the neighboring town of Cherry Grove via a sandy, wooded trail often called "The Meat Rack." It takes about 20 minutes and allows you to experience a different vibe (and more drag bars) next door.

"On The Hook Or On A Sand Bar"

Escape the city hustle with a unique cruise experience on the Great South Bay. Just one hour east of Manhattan, you'll instantly feel like you're on "Island Time." Customize your perfect day: drop anchor for a swim in a quiet cove, relax with a picnic on a secluded sandbar, or visit a lively beach bar. It's an accessible getaway with an atmosphere reminiscent of the British Virgin Islands.
